Ruffled wool coat or/eli Röyhelötakki SK 03-2013 12.

I have waited for years to be able to use this pattern! It is from the Finnish sewing and crafts magazine Suuri Käsityö. I immediately thought that this is a wool coat for my daughter S. However, when the magazine first came out, my daughter was too small for the size range. Then later she had good serviceable coats and there was no need for me to make on. Finally this autumn I got the opportunity. S got to choose the colour from the numerous thick wool coatings at the factory remnants section.

The sizing for this coat went from 104 cm to 134 cm. I chose the size 122 cm, which was just right for S. Instead of using your normal sating lining, I went for quilted and wadded one for extra warmth. This was a slight challenge for me due to the boxed pleat in the back of the coat, but I figured that I could edge stitch the pleat in the lining to keep it smooth. I still used thin sating lining to line the other side of the ruffles, though, to keep them light.

I actually started this coat before my sons duffle coat that I posted previously. However, I struggled to get nice seams and edges to the bulkiness of the wool. So, I stopped just before finishing and went to learn wool pressing techniques. I practiced with my son’s coat and then came back to this project. I re-pressed all the seams and finally the coat started to look better. To make the front edges smooth, I hand-basted them from the edge using some silk thread and then pressed them using quite a lot of force.

The pattern contained a small mistake, since the schematic showed only six buttons but the instructions (and the model picture) told to use 8. Well, I only bought six and thought they were enough. I also added a hidden button inside the right coat front that fastens to a buttonhole on the corner of the left coat front. The only actual change in the pattern was that I made the tiny pockets much bigger for allow S to keep her phone in the pocket.

S was really impatient to wear the coat. She was disappointed that I didn’t let her to wear it to school on Friday. I was afraid that S would manage to dirty the wool coat before I had even managed to take any photos of it! So, after S came back from the school we went for a walk in the forest to take photos.

We had already our first snow this year but most of it melted straight away leaving little brooks behind:

Most of the green is now gone, except for the coniferous trees and this green moss that covers the rocky hills.

S decided that November wasn’t too late to pick a bouquet of wild flowers. She started gathering heathers, ferns, dry grasses and lingonberry twigs.

After this experience I asked S what she thought about the coat. Se said that the coat was really cool, comfortable and warm. Especially she likes the ruffles. She said she wants to just put it on to run around the forest.

I really liked this wool coat pattern and I think that the outcome is lovely. As a mother I’m also happy that my daughter has a truly warm coat on those days when she wants to wear skirts and dresses.

I always find it hilarious that from looking at my pics you could think that we live in the middle of arctic wilderness! I think that during our walk we crossed from the second biggest city in Finland to the capital Helsinki! It’s a bit hard to say, since there are no city borders visible in the forest.

Röyhelötakki SK 03/2013.

Tämä Suuren Käsityön kaava on ollut minulla jemmassa jo vuosia. Heti sen nähtyäni halusin ommella sillä takin tyttärelleni, mutta lehden ilmestyessä S oli vielä liian pieni verrattuna kokovalikoimaan. Myöhemmin sitten kaapista löytyi aivan tarpeeksi takkeja, eikä omatekoiselle ollut enää tarvetta. Viimein nyt syksyllä sain mahdollisuuden ja S puolestaan sai valita mieleisensä värin palaosaston runsaasta villakangasvalikoimasta.

Tämän takin kokovalikoima oli 104 – 134 cm. Valitsin S:n pituuden mukaisen koon 122 cm, joka olikin oikea valinta. Ohuen satiinivuorin sijasta päätin käyttää paksumpaa ja lämpimämpää tikkikangasta. Tämä aiheutti omat haasteensa, sillä vuorissa oli väljyyslaskos keskitaka-saumassa. Ajattelin kuitenkin, että laskoksen reunojen tikkaus riittäisi pitämään vuorikankaan aisoissa. Käytin kuitenkin tavallista vuorikangasta röyhelöiden nurjalla puolella pitääkseni ne kevyinä.

Aloitin itse asiassa tämän takin ompelun jo ennen aiemmin esittelemäni poikani duffelitakin ompelua. Taistelin kuitenkin saadakseni saumoista siistejä ja tasaisia villakankaan paksuuden takia. Päädyin laittamaan projektin lopulta hetkeksi sivuun ja opettelin hieman räätälin silitystekniikoita, joita sitten harjoittelin duffelitakin kanssa. Uusin taidoin palasin sitten röyhelötakin pariin ja prässäsin huolella uudestaan kaikki saumat. Viimein takki alkoi näyttää oikeanlaiselta. Takin reunojen kanssa tein vielä ylimääräisen operaation ja harsin silkkilangalla käsin etureunat ja prässäsin ne sitten käyttäen reippaanlaisesti voimaa.

Pienen virheen löysin ohjeista. Kaavakuvassa takissa on kuusi nappia, mutta esimerkkikuvassa ja ohjeessa kahdeksan. Itse olin ostanut kuvan perusteella vain kuusi, mutta ne riittivät kyllä mainiosti. Lisänä takissa on oikean etukappaleen sisäpuolelle ommeltu nappi, joka kiinnittyy vasemman etukappaleen reunassa olevaan napinläpeen. Nappien lukumäärän ohella ainut oikea tekemäni muutos kaavaan oli se, että suurensin pienen pieniä taskuja reippaasti, jotta S:n puhelin mahtuisi kunnolla taskuun.

Voin lämpimästi suositella takkikaavaa muillekin. Vaikka lehti on jo muutaman vuoden vanha, sen luulisi vielä löytyvän useimmista kirjastoista.

S odotti kärsimättömästi lupaa saada käyttää takkia. Hänen pettymyksekseen en antanut pukea takkia perjantaina kouluun. Pelkäsin, että takki olisi päivän jälkeen yltä päältä ravassa ennen ensimmäisenkään valokuvan ottamista. Koulupäivän jälkeen kuitenkin lähdimme yhdessä metsäkävelylle ja sain vihdoinkin otettua kuvia. S keräsi matkalla syksyisen kukkakimpun kanervista, heinistä ja saniaisista. Löysimme myös viimeiset jämät jo lähes kokonaan sulaneesta ensilumesta.
