Amelia Tea Dress pitkähihaisena/with long sleeves

(In English below…) Eräs ystävistäni valmistui ja tapahtuman kunniaksi suuntasimme Trillby & Chadwick Detective Agencyyn. Paikka on pieni salakapakka-tyylinen cocktail-paikka tuntemattomassa sijainnissa Helsingin keskustassa. Tämä tietenkin antoi mahdollisuuden myös pukeutua teeman mukaisesti. Sattumalta samaan aikaan sain kutsun uuteen kangaskauppaan Mechelininkatu 23:een. Artenio myy kankaita ja ompelutarvikkeita ja tarjoaa samalla ompelupalvelua. Liikkeen omistaja, Natalia, antoi minun valita varastoistaan 1,5 m kangasta ilmaiseksi, mutta en mitenkään pystynyt valitsemaan kaikista ihanista kangasherkuista vain tuota määrää. (Muuten, Artenio antaa maaliskuun ajan 20 % alennuksen kankaista alennuskoodilla OMPELUELÄMÄÄ! Joten sinne siis!) Päädyin siis shoppailemaan myös omalla rahalla ja ostin sinapinkeltaista ja petroolinsinistä kukkakuvioista viskoosia. Kaava minulle oli saman tien selvä: Amelia Tea Dress Simple Sewiltä.

One of my friends graduated and to celebrate the occasion we headed to Trillby & Chadwick Detective Agency. It is a little speakeasy themed cocktail bar with a secret location in Helsinki. This of course gave me a good change to dress to the theme. It just happened that I was invited to visit the new fabric shop Artenio in Helsinki and the owner, Natalia, generously let me choose 1,5 m of fabric for free. (Btw. Artenio gives 20 % discount of the fabrics until the end of March 2018, so now it’s a good time to check out the shop!) However, I just couldn’t choose just 1,5 m when there were so lovely fabrics available! Finally I went with this lovely mustard yellow floral viscose fabric and another petrol blue floral. I immediately knew that I was going to use the Amelia Tea Dress pattern by Simple Sew.

Sain tämän kaavan Love Sewing -lehden mukana jokin aika sitten. Mekossa on hieman 1940-luvun tyyliä rypytettyine olkapäineen ja A-linjaisine hameineen. Vyötäröllä on edessä kaunis kuminauharypytys. Alkuperäisessä kaavassa tuli mukana kaksi eri vaihtoehtoa lyhyisiin liehukehihoihin, mutta päätin korvata hihat pitkillä hihoilla, jotta mekko soveltuisi paremmin talveen. Kokoja kaavassa on brittien koosta 8 kokon 20 (n. 34-48).

I got this pattern with the Love Sewing magazine some while ago. It has a vintage 1940s feeling with gathers at the shoulders and an A-line skirt. The front waistline has a beautiful shirring detail. The original dress had two different kinds of short flutter sleeves but I decided to modify the sleeves to make it more suitable for winter. The sizes go from UK 8 to 20. I made the size 10 that fitted without any modifications.

Minulla oli vain 1,9 m kangasta sillä kaupassa ei ollut enempää. Tämän olisi pitänyt kaavan mukaan riittää, mutta kangas oli vain 135 cm leveää, mikä on hieman kapeampi kuin oletettu 150 cm. En olisi onnistunut sovittamaan leveitä röyhelöhihoja muiden kaavakappaleiden viereen, mutta pyöriteltyäni kaavan palasia aikani, sain kuin sainkin kaikki mahtumaan. Hihojen kaavan nappasin Orageuse Prague puserosta. Pidän puseron hihojen mallista ja kun kädenteiden mitta osui tarpeeksi yksiin, tiesin hihojen toimivan hyvin. Muutin kuitenkin hihaa sen verran, että kavensin ranneketta reilusti ja siirsin halkion sauman yhteyteen nopeuttaakseni ompelun etenemistä.

Miksi minulla sitten oli niin kiire? No, päätin ommella juhlia varten mekon vasta saman päivän aamuna! Ajattelin jotenkin, että tämä olisi helppo ja nopea projekti, joka onnistuisi suunnilleen neljässä tunnissa. Aloitin ompelemisen yhdeksältä aamulla ja sain sen lopulta valmiiksi viiden aikoihin illalla, juuri ajoissa ehtiäkseni taksilla juhliin. Loppujen lopuksi siis mekon ompeluun meni kahdeksan tuntia, tosin sisältäen ajan, jolloin ryntäsin kangaskauppaan hakemaan puuttuvaa piilovetoketjua. Helppo ja nopea tämä projekti silti oli, vaikka tyypilliseen tapaani aliarvioinkin rankasti siihen kuluvan ajan.

I only had 1,9 m of fabric since that was all that there was left at the shop. This caused some difficulties but after playing the pattern puzzle for a while I managed to fit all the pattern pieces on the fabric. Finally I couldn’t have used the flutter sleeves anyway, since they were too wide to be cut next to the other pattern pieces. However, remember my Orageuse Prague top? I like the sleeves of the top a lot and after measuring the armholes I figured out that the Prague sleeves would fit the dress fine. However, I narrowed the cuffs and moved the slit to the seam to make sewing the dress a bit faster.

Why I needed to make the dress fast? Well, I decided to sewing the dress the day of the party! For some reason I thought this would be an easy and short project that would take something like 4 hours. I started at about 9 in the morning and finished the dress at 5 pm just in time to catch a taxi to the city!  Finally it took 8 hours including the time I had to take to rush to the fabric shop to get an invisible zipper. It was still an easy and short project but once again I underestimated the time the sewing actually takes.

En ole koskaan tehnyt kuminauhapoimutusta ja sen oppiminen oli mielenkiintoista. Olin jotenkin kuvitellut, että oikean kireyden kanssa pitäisi tehdä paljon säätämistä, mutta loppujen lopuksi kireys asettui itsestään kohdalleen. Täytin vain puolan ohuelle kumilangalla, pidensin pistonpituutta ja ompelin. Ainoastaan yksi ommelraita piti purkaa, kun kone kadotti yllättäin langankireyden ja päällyslanka jäi löysäksi.

Takaapäin mekko on hyvin yksinkertainen. Toisin kuin aidoissa vintage kaavoissa (joissa on yleensä vetoketju sicussa) tässä mekossa on keski-takasaumassa piilovetoketju.

I had never done shirring before and that was interesting thing to learn. I had somehow thought that it would be difficult to adjust the tension but I did not need to worry about it at all. I just wound my bobbin with shirring elastic, increased the stitch length and sewed. I had to unpick just one of the seams since for some reason I lost tension from my sewing thread and the stitches came out way too loose.

From the back the dress is very simple. Unlike in real vintage patterns (where the side-zipper is the norm) the zipper is an invisible one and in the center back seam. 

Tässä on mekko kuvattuna sivulta. Valitettavasti unohdin ottaa kuvat kauniista messinkisistä vintagenapeista, jonka ompelin rannekkeisiin.

Here is the dress from the side. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of the lovely vintage brass buttons that I put in the cuffs. 

Löysin tämän hienon vintage tweed-takin (aidon vaatturin tekemä vintage-takki!) Kierrätyskeskuksesta naurettavan halvalla. Takki on Harris Tweediä ja siinä on turkiskoristeet kauluksessa ja ranteissa. (En muuten osta uutta turkista, mutta hyväksyn turkiksen vintagen osalta, kun ne ovat aikansa tuotoksia.) Takki oli huippukunnossa ja superlämmin, sillä siinä on vanu ja tuulensuojakangas tweedin ja vuorin välissä. Parasta on, että takki istuu minulle täydellisesti! Minulle ei kuitenkaan tullut kylmä edes takin riisuttuani, sillä aurinko alkaa jo pikkuhiljaa lämmittää.

I got this amazing tweed coat (real tailor-made vintage thing!) from the local recycling center in a ridiculously cheap price. It is Harris Tweed and it has real fur trimmings. (Btw. I wouldn’t buy new fur but I accept fur in vintage items.) The coat is in top-shape and super warm since it has two extra layers of insulation between the tweed and the lining. Furthermore, it fits me perfectly! However, I wasn’t too cold even after taking the coat off since the sun is already starting to feel warm in here.
