Bra supplies for the lingerie sewing newbie

Making my own bra has been something I have wanted to do for ages. However, there hasn’t been that many patterns and/or bra supplies available – until just recently. Now that more and more sewers are venturing into bra making there are more and more courses, patterns and materials available, if not locally, then online.

Olen jo kauan halunnut ommella itselleni rintaliivit. Tarjolla ei ole kuitenkaan ollut paljonkaan kaavoja tai materiaaleja. Viime aikoina asiaan on kuitenkin tullut muutos. Yhä useammat ompeluharrastajat ovat uskaltautuneet ompelemaan liivejä ja tarjolla onkin yhä enemmän kursseja, materiaaleja ja kaavoja, jos nyt ei paikallisessa kangaskaupassa, niin ainakin netissä.

Where to get patterns?

There are some really good books about sewing lingerie. I have the Secrets of Sewing Lingerie, which has a lot of lingerie patterns and very good advice how to make the different details that separate lingerie from other sewing projects. However, they are not for bigger cups and the bras do not offer much support.

Alusvaateompelusta on saatavilla muutamia hyviä kirjoja. Itselläni on Secrets of Sewing Lingerie, jossa on paljon kaavoja ja yksityiskohtaisia ohjeita alusvaatteille tyypillisten yksityiskohtien tekoon. Kaavojen ainut huono puoli on se, ettei liivejä ole saatavilla isoissa kuppikoissa, eivätkä liivit tarjoa paljon tukea.

MakeBra is a Finnish company that offer both courses and bra making supplies. They also have plenty of patterns that promise support for larger busted women, too. The instructions are available also in English. The free Hipster panties pattern, however, might be something that you could sew even without instructions.

Edit. I originally thought that the MakeBra patterns were in Finnish only. However, I was contacted by Annele, the MakeBra owner and she told they have a separate English site!

Ohhh Lulu Lingerie offers plenty of lingerie patterns and even some free patterns. If bras feel too challenging, there are camisoles and panties patterns to practice with while you are gaining courage.

Canadian Bra-makers supply is a good place to get everything you need for making bras and other lingerie. Especially if you live in North America. For Europeans the postage costs are not cheap and then you have to pay customs. If you want to save on those, I recommend B wear below. Anyway, for a beginner, the kits for different patterns are a very handy way of getting into bra making since a lot of supplies are something you haven’t heard of before.

B wear sells both their own Angie bra pattern and a large collection of other patterns. They are a Swedish company and they sell everything you need for sewing lingerie, from elastics to foam cups and corset supplies. They are also the only official distributor of Bra-makers supply. I have used them once and ordered foam cups and underwires and I was happy with what I got.

MakeBra on suomalainen yritys, joka tarjoaa sekä kursseja, että alusvaatemateriaaleja. Tarjolla on myös paljon malleja, jotka lupaavat tukevuutta myös isompipovisille naisille. Ohjeet ovat suomeksi, mikä suomalaisia ompelijoita varmasti miellyttää. Ilmainen Hipster alushousukaava saattaisi kyllä onnistua myös ohjeitta.

Ohhh Lulu Lingeriellä on paljon erilaisia alusvaatekaavoja ja myös joitakin ilmaiskaavoja. Jos rintaliivit tuntuvat liian suurelta haasteelta, rohkeutta voi hakea ompelemalla pitsitoppeja ja alushousuja.

Canadalainen Bra-makers supply on hyvä paikka hankkia kaikki, mitä tarvitset rintaliivien ja muiden alusvaatteiden tekemiseen, erityisesti, jos satut asumaan Pohjois-Amerikassa. Eurooppaan postikulut ovat melko suolaiset ja kaiken lisäksi tilauksesta pitää maksaa tullit. Jos haluat siis säästää näissä, suosittelen tilaamaan tuotteet B wearin kautta (alla). Joka tapauksessa, Bra-makers supplyn tarvikepaketit ovat kätevä tapa päästä kiinni alusvaateompeluun, varsinkin kun iso osa materiaaleista on aloittelijalle aivan uusia.

Ruotsalainen B wear myy sekä omaa Angie rintaliivikaavaansa että suurta määrää muita kaavoja. Laaja tarvikevalikoima sisältää kaiken, mitä alusvaateompelija tarvitsee, kuminauhoista, liivikuppeihin ja korsettimateriaaleihin. He ovat myös Bra-makers supplyn Eurooppalainen maahantuoja. Olen tilannut heiltä liivikuppeja ja kaaritukea ja olin tyytyväinen siihen, mitä sain.

Pääkaupunkiseutulaisille mainittakoon, että Nappitalo Helsinkin Yrjönkadulla myy rintaliivimateriaaleja. Hinnat ovat rinnastettavissa nettikauppojen hintoihin, kun postikulut ottaa huomioon. Joustopitsiä saa paitsi Nappitalosta, myös Eurokankaasta ajoittain sekä Flextexiltä Vantaalta. Flextex on myös hyvä paikka etsiä erivärisiä joustavia kankaita rintaliivien kuppeihin.

Unboxing Bra-makers Supply parcel

It took something like 2 weeks for my parcel to arrive in Finland and then it had to go through the customs. I was waiting for it very impatiently!

I had gone through a lot of bra patterns before selecting the Pin-up Girls Amanda & Alyssa pattern. This was the only seamless cup pattern that I found. Since I’d very much like to replicate my favourite RTW bras that are mostly seamless, this pattern was made for me.

Bra-makers supplyn paketin saapuminen Kanadasta kesti noin pari viikkoja ja sitten sen tietysti täytyi mennä tullin läpi. Samaan aikaan odottelin pakettia kärsimättömästi.

Olin käynyt läpi ison kasan rintaliivikaavoja ja viimein päädyin hankkimaan Pin-up Girls Amanda & Alyssa kaavan. Tämä oli ainoa kaava, jossa oli saumattomat kupit. Koska tavoitteenani on mahdollisuuksen mukaan jäljitellä parhaita kaupasta ostamiani liivejä, jotka ovat enimmäkseen saumattomia, tämä kaava oli kuin tehty minulle.

The pattern is printed onto a big sheet and the pattern pieces can easily be either cut or traced. The instruction leaflet is unbound and the inside has the instructions both in English and in French. Almost every stage has a clarifying illustration to explain what you need to do.

Kaava on tulostettu isolle arkille ja siitä kaavan osat on helppo leikata tai jäljentää. Ohjelehtinen on sitomaton ja ohjeet on tarjolla sekä englanniksi että ranskaksi. Lähes jokaisesta vaiheesta on selventävät piirroskuvat.

For the seamless foam cup bra, I naturally need the foam cups. I bought two pairs. Unfortunately I bought the size too small. I selected the foam cups based on my RTW bra size but I should have gotten MA-34 instead of MA-32. I have the same thing with the underwires.

Saumattomat rintaliivit tarvitsevat tietysti liivikupit ja näitä hankin kaksi paria. Valitettavasti tein tässä virheen ja ostin kokoa liian pienet. Valitsin koon vanhojen kaupan rintaliivieni koon mukaan, mutta minun olisi pitänyt hankkia MA-34 MA-32:n sijasta. Kaaritukien kohdalla sama virhe toistui.

What I recommend, is that you measure the underwire from your old bra and compare this to the underwire size charts. Of course, the length of the underwire also depends on the model of the bra you’re making, so take that into consideration. I was pretty certain that what I have in my old bras is the short one, which has pretty unique, asymmetric shape.

Anyway, I did order replacement underwires and foam cups from B wear and now I should have the whole kit.

Suosittelenkin, että mittaat kaarituen pituuden joistakin vanhoista liiveistäsi ja vertaat sitä kaaritukien kokokarttaan. Tietenkin kaarituen pituus riippuu myös liivien mallista, joten yritä ottaa tämäkin asia huomioon. Itse olin melko varma, että vanhoissa liiveissäni on lyhyt kaarituki, jossa on melko selkeä, epäsymmetrinen muoto.

No, joka tapauksessa, tilasin uudet kaarituet ja kupit, tällä kertaa B wearilta ja nyt minulla pitäisi olla toimiva materiaalipaketti.

To make making my first bra easier I bought the Foam Cup Fabrics pack that is shown above. From top to bottom the set of fabrics contain Venice stretch fabric (some kind of polyester lycra knit) that is soft and stretchy, which is an important property since this fabric is used to cover the foam cups. In the middle is the Power net for the back band. This is the stretchy but sturdy mesh that is often seen in underwear. Last but not least, there is Duoplex that is sturdy polyester knit with no stretch whatsoever. If I understand correctly, this is used to stabilise the parts of the bra that aren’t supposed to stretch. All the fabric pieces are roughly 30 cm times 75 cm (12″ x 30″), so there is actually fabric for several bras, since the pattern pieces you need are pretty small!

Jotta ensimmäisen rintaliivien ompelu ei tyssäisi materiaalivaiheeseen, tilastin Foam Cup Fabrics pack -kangaspaketin (yllä). Ylhäältä alas lueteltuna paketissa tuli Venice stretch -kangasta, joka on jonkinlaista polyesteri lycra -neulosta. Tämä on pehmeää ja joustavaa ja sopii hyvin liivikuppien peitteeksi.  Keskellä kuvassa on Power net, joka on tukevaa mutta joustavaa verkkoa, jota alusvaatteissa usein näkee. Viimeisenä alla on Duoplex-kangas, joka on tukevaa polyesterineulosta, joka ei jousta. Jos olen ymmärtänyt oikein, tällä tuetaan kaikki ne liivien osat, jotka eivät saa joustaa. Kaikki kangaspalat ovat noin 30 x 75 cm kooltaan, joten niistä riittää materiaalia useisiinkin liiveihin!

Finally also got the Small Findings Kit. This has all the tapes and elastics plus the sliders, rings and the hook and eye closure, oh and a small little bow. The tape in the lower right corner is the underwire casing tape which is basically a tube in which you slide your underwire in.

Viimein vuorossa on Small Findings Kit. Mitenkähän tuon suomentaisi? Pikkusäläpussukka? Tämä sisälsi sitten kaikki kuminauhat, ontelonauhan, renkaat, säätimet, hakaset ja pienen rusetin koristeeksi. Aivan uusi tuttavuus oli oikean alanurkan ontelonauha, jonne kaarituki pujotetaan sisälle.
