Vintage-inspired outfit

During the Me Made May I noticed that I’m seriously lacking in both short sleeved tops and solid-coloured bottoms. I decided to remedy this by making another Gertie blouse (Butterick B6563) and a simple everyday skirt using the Simplicity 3688 1940s skirt pattern I used earlier. This resulted in a nice coordinating vintage-inspired outfit.

The skirt

For the shirt, I used quilting cotton. I don’t normally use quilting cotton for my clothes but I think that it suits this kind of vintage-style everyday tops. Also, the pattern and the colours were something that drew my eye to the fabric immediately. The skirt fabric is quite thick cotton twill in a nice lime green colour.

 

After I finished the skirt I felt that it needed some detail to look more interesting. I have seen a few pictures of 1940s skirts with funky pocket details and that was something I thought I could easily make. so, I drafted a pocket to be fitted between the seams at the side front panels. I had to rip the side front seams to slide the pocket in but that way I could hide all the seams. To make an angular detail that catches the eye, I added a facing to the top of the pocket.

The Gertie blouse

I did not need to change anything for the blouse since I liked the fact how it fitted. However, I left the top button out since I noticed I never buttoned my previous blouse all the way up. This way I ended up with a pretty notched collar.

I really like this vintage outfit. However, as I was putting the skirt on for the photos I noticed an error that made me cringe. In one of the pockets that fabric is the wrong way up! You’ll have to look at the pocket quite carefully since there is just a slight difference in the weave but after I noticed it I seem not to be able to take my eyes off it! I think that I will still end up replacing the pocket.
