Ruska dress from the new book: Breaking the pattern

I am writing this super quick since I am soon heading to the Breaking the Pattern launch party at the Named clothing studio. I haven’t yet bought the actual book, only browsed it through at the bookstore.

Luckily for me, in the newest issue of Love Sewing magazine, there was one pattern from the book: The Ruska dress.

Ruska dress.

Ruska has several different versions. There are four different sleeve options, two different collars and several lengths from a tee-shirt to a full length dress. I went with the Knot dress length, the long sleeves and a crew neck.

It comes in 9 different sizes. I think that the numbering from 1 to 9 came from the Love Sewing magazine. I assumed that the size 1 corresponded to the size 32 in European sizes and the size 3 (36 or UK 8) fitted me nicely. For some reason, the magazine only had finished measurements and no actual size chart which made it a bit difficult to choose the right size. For me, there was about 7 cm of ease in the bust.

I thought it a nice idea to wear something from the actual book to the launch party so I quickly made this dress. My fabric was pretty thick knit, so I had to leave out the knot detail. I put in long sleeves, but I didn’t have enough fabric for them. Instead, I took some tweed like knit and made the sleeves from a completely different material. So, in my way, I broke this pattern!

The fit was excellent just the way the pattern was and I made no adjustments at all. Normally I have to at least shorten the hem but not this time.

I am really happy with how this dress turned out and can recommend this pattern to everyone else, too. Now I cannot wait to get the actual book and make more of the garments!

Thank you for reading and do subscribe if you like my posts! Happy sewing!
