Tilly and the buttons Agnes top

My friend Jenna gave me some of her old patterns and this Tilly and the Buttons Agnes top was among those. I have wanted to make this top for a while since I love the ruched sleeves. I found this very nice and drapey viscose jersey fabric from the remnant bin and it was just perfect for this project.

Previously, I have had problems with sizing what comes to the jersey tops. The cotton tops often become too small and the viscose ones too big. This is, of course, due to the fact that the viscose jersey stretches a lot more than a cotton jersey. This time I was determined to get the fit right.

The Agnes top comes in 8 sizes corresponding to bust measurements 76 cm to 112 cm or 30 to 44″. According to the Agnes top size chart, I would have been the size 3. However, the recommended fabric was cotton jersey. I compared the actual pattern pieces to a well-fitting viscose jersey top I owned and saw that I needed to make the size 2 instead.

Sewing the top was easy. I didn’t really bother with the instructions as I have enough experience to make this without them. However, the instructions are detailed with lots of photos to clarify different steps. I ditched the collar band and bound the neckline by using the bias tape attachment of my cover stitch machine.

The other adjustment I made was to shorten the sleeves since I was making a summer top.

I absolutely love the outcome! In fact, I have been wearing this top since I finished it and I am in the process of making another. I love the ruched sleeves that transform an ordinary tee-shirt into something special. The viscose jersey makes sleeves that are not as “puffy” as the ones in the cover image, but I prefer the sleeves this way. All in all, I can warmly recommend this sewing pattern!
