Ironing board covers for Ommel festival

Ommel festival is coming soon and I am excitedly waiting for it! If you have any plans to visit Helsinki, the perfect time is between 7th and 9th of June when Ommel 2019 sewing festival takes place! Dozens of people, myself included, are volunteering to make this festival happen and I already started by making 5 ironing board covers for the festival sewing workshops and the sewing retreat.

Ommel 2019 is the biggest sewing event in Finland combining fabric and sewing supply market, a weekend-long sewing retreat, lectures, courses and workshops for the whole family. Last year over 3000 people attended the festival and the rumour has that the event is even bigger this year. Best of it is that the admission is free and so are the workshops and the lectures! This year’s theme is Nordic fabrics and fabric sellers from all Nordic countries have been invited. Sewists from all over the world are warmly welcome to attend!

You don’t have to know Finnish to attend! If you are interested in taking a short sewing course, there are several that offer English teaching. Also, if your budget is low or if you just can’t part your sewing machine and want to sew through the night, very cheap accommodation (20 €/night!) is also provided.

Jos sinulla on aikomusta tehdä kesäreissu Helsinkiin, niin Ommel 2019 -festareiden aikaan 7.-9.6. voi tehdä samalla kesän kangas- ja ompelutarvikehankinnat ja ehkä myös oppia jotain uutta. Kymmenet vapaaehtoiset osallistuvat festivaalin järjestelyihin ja itse aloitin näin jo ajoissa ompelemalla 5 silityslaudan päällistä ompelupajoihin ja -laneihin.

Ommel yhdistää kangas- ja ompelutarvikemarkkinat, viikonlopun mittaiset ompelulanit ja lukuisat työpajat, luennot ja kurssit saman katon alle. Viime vuonna ensimmäistä kertaa pidetyt festarit keräsivät yli 3000 kävijää ja huhujen mukaan tänä vuonna festarien koko kasvaa entisestään. Sisäänpääsy on ilmainen ja ilmaiseksi voi osallistua myös luennoille ja lukuisiin työpajoihin. Tämän vuoden teemana on pohjoismaisuus ja myyjiä on tulossa Suomen lisäksi ainakin Ruotsista.

Festivaalin aikana on tarjolla halpaa luokkamajoitusta budjettimatkaajille ja niille, jotka eivät halua luopua ompelukoneestaan yön ajaksi. Lisää tietoa tästä ja kaikesta muusta löydät Ommelin omilta nettisivuilta.

Down below are the instructions to make a similar kind of ironing board covers for a steam ironing board. You can also use the instructions to make a cover for a regular board. However, it is useful to know that the wadding I used lets the steam through.

Alla on ohjeet samanlaisen höyrysilityslaudan päällisen tekemiseen. Ohjeet soveltuvat myös perinteisen laudan päällisen tekemiseen, mutta höyryraudan käyttäjiä varmasti kiinnostaa tietää, että käyttämäni vanu päästää höyryn hyvin läpi.

How to make an ironing board cover? – Ohje silityslaudan päälliseen

Materials – Materiaalit

• Lightweight (appr. quilting weight) cotton
• Polyester wadding (I used Thermolam Vlieseline 272)
• 3 cm (1 1/4″) wide bias tape
• Thin polyester cord (I used this.)
• Sewing thread

Wash your fabric before you cut it to prevent it from shrinking later.

• Ohuehkoa puuvillakangasta
• Polyester-vanua (Käytin tätä Thermolam Vlieseline 272 -vanua.)
• 3 cm leveää vinonauhaa
• Ohutta polyester-nyöriä (Käytin tätä laskosverhoihin tarkoitettua nyöriä.)
• Ompelulankaa

The pattern for the cover – Kaavan piirtäminen

Take a big piece of paper and place your ironing board upside down on it. Trace around the board but keep about 5 cm (2″) away from the edge to create the part of the cover that curves around the edges in the final cover. That’s the pattern you need!

You can measure the outer rim of the pattern to determine how much cord and bias tape you need.

Ota iso paperi ja laita silityslauta sen päälle ylösalaisin. Piirrä kaava silityslaudan ympäri niin, että se on joka reunalta 5 cm lautaa suurempi. Nämä leveät reunat kääntyvät päällisessä laudan alle.

Voit mitata kaavan ulkoreunan pituuden saadaksesi selville vinonauhan ja polyester-nyörin menekin.

Cutting and sewing – Leikkuu ja ompelu

Use the pattern to cut out ironing board cover pieces from the cotton and the wadding. Pin the pieces together.

Machine baste around the edges to fasten the wadding to the cotton. Keep close to the edge so that the basted stitching line can be later covered with the bias tape.

Leikkaa kaavan avulla palaset puuvillakankaasta ja vanusta. Kiinnitä palaset nuppineuloilla reunoistaan.

Ompele pitkällä pistonpituudella “harsintaommel” aivan päällisen reunasta, jotta kerrokset pysyvät yhdessä. Ompelen tulisi jäädä myöhemmin vinonauhan alle.

Turn about 1 cm (3/8″) of the bias tape under. Pin the end to the middle of the “blunt” end of the ironing board cover. Start sewing close to the edge but check to see that you’ll catch the edge under the edge. (You can attach the bias tape in two stages if you find it too hard to sew it on in one go.) When you are almost finished, cut the bias tape leaving about 1cm (3/8″) to fold under at the end. Finish by sewing a few times back and forth over the place where the ends meet.

Take a bodkin needle or a safety pin and thread your cord through it. Thread the cord through the channel created by the bias tape. Smooth out the edges and finish by tying the cord ends together so that they don’t escape into the channel.

Käännä vinonauhan päästä n. 1 cm nurjalle. Neulaa vinonauhan pää keskelle päällisen “tylppää” päätä. Ompele vinonauha kiinni läheltä reunaa, mutta varmista, että alle taitettu vinonauhan reuna kiinnittyy samalla. (Voit myös kiinnittää vinonauhan kahdella erillisellä ompeleella, jos se tuntuu helpommalta.) Kun olet lähes palannut aloituskohtaan, leikkaa vinonauha oikeaan mittaansa, mutta lisää 1 cm, jotta voit huolitella vinonauhan loppupään samaan tapaan kuin alkupään. Viimeistele ompelemalla pari kertaa edestakaisin kohdassa, jossa vinonauhan päät yhtyvät.

Ota tylppä neula tai hakaneula ja pujota sen avulla nyöri vinonauhan muodostamaan kujaan. Siloittele rypyt ja sido viimeiseksi nyörin päät yhteen, jotta ne eivät ne karkaa takaisin kujaan.

Fasten the cover on the grid of the ironing board by pulling hard from the two cords. The thin polyester cord slides quite effortlessly and gathers the edges under the board. Smooth out any wrinkles and finish by tying the ends to a knot.

Kiinnitä päällinen lautaan vetämällä nyöreistä ja kiristämällä reunat näin laudan reunojen yli laudan alle. Tasoittele rypyt ja viimeiseksi solmi nyörin päät solmulle. Nauti uudistetusta silityslaudastasi!

I made three covers and then, after getting more supplies, made two more. I hope that these, when combined with some existing boards, will be enough for the festival workshops and retreats!
