Now that the weather has turned colder my wardrobe desperately needs long sleeved tees. I also wanted something fast to sew, so I decided to test the Aurora top pattern by Hey June Handmade.

Aurora top has a slouchy fit through the body and dolman sleeve, and a fitted long lower sleeve. It comes with an option for coordinating fabric insets on the sides. I decided that the side insets were a great way to use up some fabric remnants, so I went for it.

Aurora top is a print-at-home pdf-pattern. You can choose to print either a pattern with the side insets or the one without. If in doubt, I recommend printing the former, since you can easily tape the inset piece to the front and back pattern piece, if you decide to leave the inset out.

The pattern has sizes ranging from XS to 2XL. I made the size S that fitted well. You could use almost any kind of knit fabric with this top. I went for black roma ponte for the main fabric and added insets and the lower sleeves from black and white diagonal check.

Sewing this was super fast. I like the dolman sleeves since they remove the most complicated part – fitting the sleeves to the armholes. Furthermore, the neckline is finished by using a facing, so you don’t need to fiddle with neck bands. The pattern instructs using narrow zigzag or double needle for the hems. I used my cover stitch machine that for once worked without skipping any stitches! I could really recommend this pattern even for beginners. Not only is the construction simple, but the instructions are also very clear and come with useful pictures.

This top is super comfortable. The ponte knit makes it warm and the slouchiness makes it perfect when you just want to wear something relaxed with your jeans. I think this pattern also works for many kinds of body types.

You can really change the look for this blouse by changing a fabric. The original pattern picture has some marine vibe to it due to stripy jersey fabric. Mine is slightly more modern and edgy. I also love this super feminine version from the Hey June web page:

Hey June Handmade Aurora toppi

Nyt kun sää on kylmentynyt, vaatekaappini kaipaa epätoivoisesti lisää pitkähihaisia teepaitoja. Mieleni myös teki jotain nopeaa ommeltavaa, joten valitsin testattavakseni Hey June Handmade Aurora topin.

Aurora on väljä neuletoppi, jossa on dolman-hihat, jotka kapenevat käsivarrenmyötäisiksi. Perustopin lisäksi kaavassa on vaihtoehtona tehdä helmaan kontrastiväriset paneelit. Päätin heti, että tämä olisi hyvä tapa käyttää kangaslaatikoissa pyöriviä pienempiä kangasjämiä.

Aurora toppi on kotitulostimella printattava englanninkielinen pdf-kaava. Vaihtoehtona on tulostaa joko sivupaneelein varustettu versio tai perustoppi. Suosittelen empivää tulostamaan mieluummin sivupaneeli-version, sillä sivupaneelipala on helppo teipata kiinni etu- ja takakappaleeseen, jos sen päättää jättää pois.

Kaavan koot menevät koosta XS kokoon 2XL. Minä tein mittojeni mukaan koon S, joka sopikin hyvin. Tähän toppiin voi käyttää melkein mitä tahansa neulosta. Minä valitsin kangasvarastostani mustaa roma ponte -neulosta ja käytin tyttären mekkoprojektista jäänyttä vinoruudullista neulosta sekä sivupaneeleihin että hihoihin.

Tämä toppi on todella nopeatekoinen. Pidän dolman hihoista, sillä niiden kanssa hankalin vaihe – hihojen istuttaminen pyöriöille – jää pois. Pääntie huolitellaan alavaralla, joten kanttauksenkaan kanssa ei tarvitse näperrellä. Helmat on suositeltu ohjeessa huolittelemaan joko kapealla siksakilla tai kaksoisneulalla. Itse käytin peitetikkikonettani, joka kerrankin suostui yhteispeliin eikä tehnyt ollenkaan hyppytikkiä! Voin suositella tätä kaavaa jopa aivan aloittelijoille. Helpon rakenteen lisäksi kuvitetut ohjeet tekevät ompelusta yksinkertaista.

Tästä topista tulikin sitten todella mukava ja se pääsi heti farkkujen pariksi päälle. Kiinnostavaa on se kuinka kangasta vaihtamalla toppi vaihtuu alkuperäisestä merihenkisestä raitatopista, modernimpaan mustavalkoiseen. Lempiversioni taitaa kuitenkin olla Hey Junen sivuilla kuvattu yksivärinen valkoinen toppi. Nyt kun kaava on jo kerran testattu, taitaa minun pitää tehdä jossain vaiheessa itselleni vastaavanlainen!
