The new MakeBra online course / MakeBran uusi verkkokurssi < with my hands

This post is done in collaboration with Make Bra, the Finnish company that provides sewing patterns, materials for lingerie and courses for bra and swimwear-making. Just last week they launched a new online course on how to make a foam-cup bra and I got to be one of the first people to test it! The course is available in both English and Finnish and currently, it costs 49 €.

Tämä postaus on tehty yhteistyössä Make Bran kanssa, joka on suomalainen alusvaatteiden ompelukaavoja, -tarvikkeita ja kursseja tarjoava yritys. Viime viikolla Make Bra julkaisi uuden verkkokurssin ja sain olla heti ensimmäisten joukossa testaamassa sitä. Kurssi on saatavana sekä suomeksi että englanniksi ja maksaa tällä hetkellä 49 €.

What does the course include? – Mitä kurssi sisältää?

Before you begin – Ennen kuin aloitat

The course starts with the basics. I recommend reading the Before you begin section before you even buy a pattern or any supplies. In that section, all the needed equipment and materials are introduced and you’ll get tips on e.g. how to choose a right kind of a needle. You’ll also learn the bra vocabulary and get advice on how to select the materials that are best suited for your bra.

Kurssi lähtee perusteista. Ennen kuin aloitat -osio kannattaa lukaista läpi jo ennen kuin menet hankkimaan sopivan kaavan ja hankkimaan materiaalit. Osiossa käydään läpi tarvittavat välineet ja annetaan vinkkejä mm. sopivan neulan valintaan, jotta ompelu sujuisi ilman ongelmia. Opit ymmärtämään tarvittavat termit ja valitsemaan juuri itsellesi sopivimmat materiaalit.

Before proceeding into the actual bra, the course teaches how to sew a test bra. The test bra is a very simple and quick to make toile that is used to check the fit and to make all the necessary adjustments. This was one of the best things that I learned on this course! Nothing would be more frustrating than spending hours sewing up a gorgeous bra and then realise that the cup size is wrong for you!

Ennen varsinaisten liivien ompeluun siirtymistä kurssilla ommellaan testiliivit. Näiden nopeatekoisten liivien avulla on helppo testata koko ja tehdä tarvittavat sovitusmuutokset. Tämä oli minusta kurssin parasta antia! Mikään ei olisi turhauttavampaa kuin ommella upeat liivit valmiiksi ja todeta sitten kuppikoon olevan väärä!

Sewing the bra – Rintaliivien valmistus

The course uses three different Make Bra patterns: DL01, DL02 and DL04.. However, the instructions can be used even more generally to make any foam-cup bras since the three patterns incorporate all the essential construction details that are often encountered in bra patterns.

All the steps of bra making are first shown on video with English voice over. The accompanying text adds some details and more instructions where the three patterns differ from each other.

The provided printable Stitch length and width adjusting guide is very useful. Using the guide it is easy to adjust your stitches to correct size as different sewing machines require different settings.

I found it best to first watch the video to get an idea of what was coming and then read the more detailed instructions before starting to sew. This helped particularly when the pattern used in the video differed from the pattern I was using.

Kurssilla käytetään kolmea Make Bran kaavaa, jotka ovat DL01, DL02 ja DL04. Ohjeet soveltuvat kuitenkin yleisemminkin vuoritettujen rintaliivien valmistukseen, sillä valitut kaavat sisältävät kaikki olennaiset osat, joita kaavoissa tulee vastaan.

Videolla käydään läpi kaikki työvaiheet ja lisänä oleva kuvitettu tekstiosio tarkentaa videon ohjeita ja antaa ohjeita silloin, kun eri kaavojen välillä on ompelun osalta eroavaisuuksia.

Havaitsin erittäin hyödylliseksi myös tulostettavan pdf-ohjeen, jonka avulla voit määrittää eri työvaiheessa olevan tikinpituuden juuri oikeanlaiseksi – eri ompelukoneiden asetukset kun poikkeavat toisistaan.

Itse suosittelin katsomaan ensin videon läpi ja sitten lukemaan huolellisesti tekstin ennen itse työvaiheeseen siirtymistä. Tästä on erityisesti hyötyä silloin, kun videossa työvaihe esitetään eri kaavan avulla kuin mitä itse olet tekemässä.

conclusions – Kurssin anti

I think that the online course is a nice addition to the existing Make Bra courses. It suits for those who are not able to attend the live courses or who find the price of the live courses too expensive. In addition, you can go back to the course material over and over again. In the future, you will also get free updates, like the already promised Fitting room section where some possible fit issues and their fixes are handled in a more detailed manner.

I think the best thing with the Make Bra method is the concentration on the proper fit and support. Also the detailed introduction into different materials and the useful comparisons between different fabric choises benefit even someone who has previous experience in bra making.

Online-kurssi on hieno lisä Make Bran kursseihin. Se sopii niille, jotka eivät pääse paikalle live-kursseille tai jolle live-kurssien hinta tuntuu liian korkealta. Kurssimateriaalin pariin voi lisäksi palata uudelleen ja uudelleen ja kurssi myös tulee päivittymään ajan myötä mm. sovitusosiolla, jossa käydää läpi yksityiskohtaisesti erilaisia mahdollisia istuvuusongelmia ja sen, miten niitä korjataan.

Make Bran kursseilla parasta onkin keskittyminen istuvien ja sopivasti tukevien liivien ompeluun. Myös laaja katsaus eri materiaaleihin ja materiaalien vertailu keskenään hyödyttävät myös ompelijaa, jolla on aiempaa kokemusta.

Bra DL04 – Rintaliivit DL04-kaavalla

So, what did I make with the help of the course? This time I chose the pattern DL04 that was kindly provided for me by Make Bra with all the materials.

Mitä sitten itse ompelin kursilla? Valitsin tällä kertaa kaavan DL04, jonka Make Bra tarjosi ystävällisesti minulle materiaaleineen.

Pattern adjustments – Kaavan muokkaus

In this particular bra, the B-cup felt closest to my size. All the pattern modifications are shown in the picture below. The green parts are the parts I removed from the pattern.

Kyseisessä liivissä B-kuppi tuntui sopivimmalta. Alapuolisesta kuvasta näkyy tekemäni sovitusmuutokset. Vihreällä merkityt osat olen leikannut kaavasta pois.

I lowered the cup at the centre front so that it would suit for my short underwires. I added seam allowance to the upper edge of the bridge for reasons I reveal later. I also narrowed down the bride for a few millimetres.

At the test bra stage the cup felt a bit too flat at the lower part of the cup. To fix this, I widened the wedge at the lower cup from its lower part.

I also include the part of the cup that I removed from the underarm. However, I did not do this at the test bra stage but only after I had fastened the final cups to the band when I saw that the cup was slightly too big for the frame.

Madalsin kuppia keskeltä etuosasta, jotta se sopisi käytettäväksi lyhyiden kaaritukien kanssa. Jätin myös keskiosaan saumanvaran, johon syy selviää myöhemmin. Kavensin myös keskiosaa muutaman millin.

Sovittaessa kuppi tuntui hieman liian litteältä alaosastaan. Niinpä muotoilin hieman alakupin kiilaa alaosastaan leveämmäksi.

Kuvaan olen merkinnyt myös kainalon alta poistamani kiilan. Tätä en tehnyt kuitenkaan vielä ensimmäisessä sovitusvaiheessa vaan vasta sitten, kun olin ommellut kupin paikoilleen ja havainnut kupin hieman liian reiluksi sivuosastaan.

The materials and the sewing – Materiaalit ja ompelu

Once again I chose to use white lycra for the band. The white lace provided by Annele, however, tempted me and I decided to add a lace decorating piece to the front. I had to add a centre front seam to the lace, though, in order to have the nice scalloped edges at the sides.

As I was playing with the lace, I realised wanting to have the pretty scallops at the edge of the cups, too. This required me to leave out the FOE at the upper edge of the cup. This is also why I needed to finish the upper edge of the bridge the same way as in the patterns DL01 and DL02. (Of course, the course already included the instructions for those.)

The lace was pretty stretchy, so I did the same thing as I did with this previous lace bra and I stretched the lace over the foam cup. This way I did not need to have the horizontal seam in the lace. Instead, I removed the extra lace by adding a dart. Somehow I failed to make the lace cups symmetric but I finally managed to get the lace to settle on the cups. I cut the foam lining to the same scalloped shape and I finished the foam lining edge with some dense zigzag. I hand-stitched the upper edge of the lace to the cup.

Ympäryksen materiaaliksi valitsin taas valkoisen lycran. Annelen minulle lähettämä valkoinen pitsi kuitenkin houkutteli kokeiluun ja päätin päällystää etuosan pitsillä. Tätä varten pitsiin piti tehdä keskelle eteen sauma, jotta sain kauniit reunapitsit koristamaan sivuosia.

Asetellessani pitsiä tajusin haluavani pitsin ihanan aaltoreunan myös kupin yläreunaan. Tästä syystä siis minun oli jätettävä yläreunan FOE pois ja huoliteltava keskiosan yläreuna samoin kuin Make Bran liiveissä DL01 ja DL02. (Ohjeet tähän olivat näppärästi mukana kurssimateriaalissa.)

Pitsi oli joustavaa, joten päätin tehdä samoin kuin taannoin näissä liiveissä ja pingottaa pitsin mahdollisimman hyvin kupin päälle ja poistaa ylimäärän muotolaskoksella. Ihan ei näköjään pitsin symmetrinen leikkaus mennyt putkeen, mutta sain kuin sainkin pitsin pingotettua kupin päälle. Vuorin yläreunan leikkasin pitsin reunan mukaan ja huolittelin tiheällä siksakilla. Sitten ompelin pitsin käsin yläreunastaan vuoriin kiinni.

The cups looked nice, but I still felt like they needed some colour as I had already made two white bras. I got an idea and added a tiny bit of pink embroidery following the pattern of the lace.

Kupit näyttivät ihan hyviltä, mutta kaipasin hieman piristystä, kun olin jo kahdet kokovalkeat liivit aiemmin ommellut. Sainkin sitten idean ja lisäsin hieman kirjailua, jonka tein vaaleanpunaisella kirjontalangalla pitsin kuviota noudatellen.

Finishing – Viimeistely

After the embroidery, I again went along with the course and sew the cup onto the band, finished the sides with the FOE and fastened the shoulder straps. I only took a little shortcut and used a hook-and-eye tape that was already the right size so that I did not have to finish the outer edges. By the way, in the picture above you can clearly see how I finished the upper edges of the foam cups and how the shoulder straps are fastened.

Kirjailun jälkeen jatkoin taas kurssin mukaan ja ompelin kupit kiinni, huolittelin sivuosat FOE:lla ja kiinnitin olkaimet. Sen verran kuitenkin nykäisin mutkia suoraksi, että käytin valmista hakasparia, jonka reunoja ei tarvinnut huolitella. Yllä olevasta kuvasta näkyy myös kätevästi se, miten kuppien yläreuna on huoliteltu, ja kuinka olkaimet on kiinnitetty.

I found these little heart charms at the local recycling centre and picked them up to be used in lingerie projects. The heart sits nicely at the centre of the bridge.

Kierrätyskeskuksen askareteluhyllystä löytynyt pieni sydänkoriste pääsi koristamaan kuppien väliä.

This is now the fifth bra that I have sewn. Despite some little symmetry issues with the lace, I think these are my most successful ones. The fit is perfect and I think this pattern will become my go-to bra pattern.

I now suspect that I may finally have taken a one cup size too small with my previous Make Bra bras because when I’m wearing them the underwire starts slowly creeping upward. I think that instead of going down from the B cup I should have made a similar kind of adjustment as I did with this bra and added more room to the lower part of the cup. The previous lace bra that I made otherwise fits nicely but the band has stretched a lot in use and I think I will have to take it in at some point. Sewing is always learning and that is one of the reasons why this hobby is so addictive!

Nämä ovat nyt viidennet liivini, jotka olen ommellut ja pienistä pitsin symmetriaongelmista huolimatta ne parhaat. Istuvuus on täydellinen ja luulen, että tästä kaavasta tuli minulle se lemppari rintaliivikaava.

Epäilen, että edellisissä Make Bra liiveissäni tulin sittenkin ottaneeksi liian pienen kuppikoon, sillä kaarituki tuntui käytössä nousevan ylöspäin. Kuppikoon pienentämisen sijaan minun olisi varmaan pitänyt tehdä samantapainen tilaa kupin alaosaan lisäävä sovitusmuutos kuin mitä tein näihin liiveihin. Edelliset valmiiksi prässätyn kupin päälle tekemäni pitsiliivit taas ovat löystyneet käytössä niin, että minun pitää jossakin vaiheessa lyhentää ympärystää hieman. Aina oppii uutta ja siksipä tämä ompeluharrastus onkin niin addiktiivista!
