Sports outfit with flowers
My almost 9-year-old daughter needed a new sports outfit. She loves Nuppu print company floral prints so I decided to make a bit different sports outfits for both my daughter’s circus and break dance hobbies using Sydäntalvi sports jersey.
Circus Leggings
I started with the leggings. I have noticed that the regular leggings patterns don’t really work for my daughter. With all the sports she does she has developed strong thighs and bum and those combined with a very narrow waist mean that the leggings don’t stay put. So, I had to draft a pattern by myself for her tiny hourglass figure.

I used Winifred Aldrich’s book to draft a basic pattern for leggings. By comparing the pattern sizes to my daughter’s measurements, I noticed that the size for 122 cm fitted best. However, it had to be modified to add more room for thighs and bum. I did this by lengthening the back crotch curve. This is what the pattern ended up looking:

If you are interested to try it out, you can download the pdf pattern below. The pattern fits a girl with a hip size of 68 cm or 27″. I must admit that I further narrowed the legs at the ankle a bit but that is an easy adjustment to make. The file is one big pdf file, but you can print it in poster format on several sheets of paper.
The lycra sports top with sleeves
I had quite a big piece left after making the leggings. S’s circus and break dance hobbies mean that she needs sleeves that go over elbows to avoid burns to her skin. The top also needed to be tight to stay put in all the acrobatic moves. So, I drafted a close-fitting top pattern with sleeves.

After cutting out the sleeves I didn’t have enough for the front and back pieces, so I chopped the front and back patterns along princess seams and made the sides out of different dark blue lycra that I had in my stash. On a whim, I removed the side seams completely by taping together the

I really like how this top turned out. The dark blue lycra I found in my stash was as close a fit as it was possible to match the dark blue in the floral fabric. The darker panels also balance the busy print nicely.
Breakdance trousers
Besides making leggings I made a pair of looser fitting lycra trousers out of the dark blue lycra. This time I used a pattern from Ottobre style 4/2018. The pattern is number 33. Cool Cut and it comes in sizes 128 to 170 cm.

The pattern has pleats to make the trousers loose fitting at the hips but the legs narrow towards the ankles. Two pockets add a nice feature to these trousers.

I really like this pattern. I think that these suit perfectly for break dance with the loose fit making them a bit more street style than a basic pair of leggings.
This is all for today! Happy sewing!

I love how the necessary side panels turned into a wonderful design feature. Also how you used the functional requirements of elbow covering and adjustments for strong legs to make such a great outfit.

Thank you! I still need to do more development. After S tried wearing the outfit at her dance practice, she told me that the fabric was too slippery for the break dance tricks. I have to make another top out of cotton.
