I am patterns Sirius

I have been eyeing I am patterns company website a while. It is a French sewing pattern company that also publishes patterns in English. They have quite unique style that is both modern, graphic and still very wearable. Finally I decided to try the I am patterns Sirius top that I got in pdf format.

Sirius is a sweater top with a straight collar and an interesting pleated detail at the back. It comes in French sizes 36 to 46, which correspond approximately the standard European 34 to 44. I chose the size 38 which turned out to be a pretty good fit.

The main fabric for this top is meant to be wool, for example boiled or felted wool or then sweatshirting. The pleated part is then made in lightweight fabric such as organza, voile or lace. I had this off-white ribbed sweatshirting in my stash so I decided to use it. For the pleated part I used a piece of white polyester with a slight woven check pattern that I had bought to make a blouse of, but that I had discarded after I realised it was too see-through.

Sewing this wasn’t really difficult, but the buttoning placket took some thinking before I managed to make it correctly. Or at least so that it looks about right. I am still not exactly sure that I followed the instructions to the letter. My fabric was not exactly perfect for this top since it stretched a lot. Pressing worked to shrink the seams back to their original length but I had to enforce the shoulder seams with some clear elastic tape to prevent them from stretching. I still took in a bit from the shoulders but I believe it is not really a problem with the pattern but more because of my weird fabric.

Finally I am happy how this top looks. I don’t know if my back will be cold but the sweater it otherwise warm and very comfortable. It will also catch people’s eyes due to its unique style.
