Scissors case – Saksikotelo

Everyone, who has travelled anywhere with scissors, knows that they are tricky item to pack. If your scissors came with a plastic case, you’ve probably lost it a long time ago. Of course, you can always rip a cereal box and wrap your scissors in some cardboard but it’s a temporary and an ugly solution. I decided to make a proper case for my pink sewing scissors using leather.

I have sewn leather mainly with my machine but I have wanted to learn how to sew leather properly by hand. Finally, it wasn’t so difficult.

First, I made a pattern by wrapping my scissors into some paper. The whole case is made out of one piece of leather that is about 1.5 mm thick. I decided to have a decorative stitch running all the way around the lid. At the position of the needle (in the picture below) the decorative stitch turns into a seam. Here it was important that my holes aligned so I used this point as a starting point to make holes for my stitches.

Kaikki koskaan saksia matkalle pakanneet tietävät, kuinka hankalaa se on. Saksien muovinen suojakotelo on tietysti hukassa ja muropaketin kyljestä repäisty pahvikääre on paitsi tilapäinen, myös ruma apu. Päätin harjoitella nahkan ompelua tekemällä ompelusaksilleni kotelon nahkasta.

Olen aiemmin ommellut nahkaa lähinnä vain koneella, mutta tällä kertaa päätin opetella ompelemaan sitä perinteisellä menetelmällä, käsin. Loppujen lopuksi se ei ollutkaan kovin vaikeaa.

Tein itselleni kaavan käärimällä sakseni paperiin. Koko kotelo on tehty yhdestä palasesta nahkaa, jonka paksuus oli noin 1,5 mm. Päätin koristella läpän reunan koristetikkauksella. Alakuvan neulalla merkityssä kohdassa koristetikkaus vaihtui sitten saumaksi. Tämä kohta oli myös tärkeä siksi, että sauman molempien puolien reikien tuli olla tarkasti kohdakkain.

Marking the stitch spacing – Tikkien paikkojen merkitseminen

I bought a leather stitching wheel to accurately mark the stitch spacing but you could also use a paper template for this. I only made small marks with the wheel and then went through each mark with my sharp awl. Wonder clips were very useful in holding the edges of the leather together but when I wanted to be very accurate I pushed a spare needle through the holes in both sides of the seam.

Ostin itselleni merkkausrissan, jolla on kätevää merkitä reikien paikat, mutta paperista tehty malline ajaisi varmasti saman asian, kun pienestä projektista on kyse. Tein rissalla vain pienet painaumat, joiden perusteella sitten saatoin tehdä naskalilla kunnolliset ompelureiät. Muoviset klipsut auttoivat pitämään sauman puolikkaat paikallaan. Silloin, kun halusin olla todella tarkka, työnsin ohuen neulan molempien puolten reikien läpi.

Sewing leather – Nahan ompelu

Leather is traditionally sewn by using waxed thread. The waxing makes the thread stronger and prevents tangles. However, I didn’t have any pre-waxed thread. What to do?

Well, I think you have already met my beeswax candle? I took some thickish top-stitching thread and I run it a few times through the side of the candle! Beeswax is beeswax whether it is packaged for a tailor or a candlemaker!

Nahkaa ommellaan perinteisesti vahatulla langalla. Vahaus tekee langasta vahvempaa ja estää lankaa sotkeutumasta. Minulla ei kuitenkaan ollut valmiiksi vahattua lankaa. Mikä neuvoksi?

Olette varmaan jo tavanneet mehiläisvahakynttiläni? Otin reilun parin metrin pätkän paksuhkoa (tikkaus?) lankaa ja vedin sitä muutamia kertoja kynttilänsyrjää vasten. Mehiläisvaha on mehiläisvahaa myytiin sitä sitten räätälille tai kynttiläntekijälle!

Leather is usually sewn with two needles. I had a little bit over 2 metres of thread and I threaded one needle into each end. There are some good online tutorials on how to sew leather and I recommend checking them out. I took some liberties because I don’t own all the tools of the trade.

I used a basic saddle stitch in which both needles are threaded through the same hole from opposite directions. This creates a very neat looking seam.

Tyypillinen tapa ommella nahkaa on käyttää kahta neulaa. Otin hieman yli 2 metriä vahattua lankaa ja pujotin neulan molempiin päihin. Netistä löytyy paljon hyviä tutoriaaleja nahan ompeluun ja suosittelen niitä lämpimästi. Minun menetelmäni on hieman yksinkertaistettu, sillä en omista kaikkia hienoja nahkatyöhön tarvittavia työkaluja.

Käytin satulaommelta, jossa molemmat neulat pujotetaan aina saman reiän kautta eri suunnista. Tämä muodostaa hyvin siistin näköisen sauman.

I finished the seam by making a few back stitches and then cut the threads.

Päättelin sauman ompelemalla muutaman tikin takaisinpäin ja katkaisin molemmat langat.

Attaching the press fastener – Nepparin kiinnitys

The final step was to fasten the snap. I used 15 mm Prym “Anorak” Press fasteners. I first determined the position of the snap by putting my scissors in and sticking a needle through the two topmost layers of leather. Then I made proper holes with my Prym pliers. I used the same pliers to fasten the snap:

Viimeisenä työvaiheena koteloon piti vielä kiinnittää neppari. Käytin 15 mm leveitä Prymin “Anorak” neppareita. Oikean kohdan nepparille sain laittamalla sakset koteloon ja sulkemalla läpän. Työnsin sitten neulan kahden päällimmäisen nahkakerroksen läpi merkatakseni nepparin paikan. Suurensin reiät Prymin nepparipihdien reikäleukojen avulla ja sitten kiinnitin samoilla pihdeillä nepparin paikalleen.

I am very happy with how my scissors case turned out! Now I only need to make another smaller one for my smaller pair of scissors.
