Vado designs Classic Fit Men’s Shirt from Bootstrapfashion

We celebrated Father’s day last Sunday and despite living hundreds of kilometres away from my dad, I wanted to make him a shirt. My previous experience with Vado designs Men’s Shirt patterns at Bootstrapfashion.com (I am affiliated with Bootstrapfashion.com. Support this blog by clicking into the shop through my links!) was a good one, so I decided to try another pattern from them. This time I chose the Classic Fit Men’s Shirt:

This pattern is custom made to given measurements. Luckily I had taken measurements before, so I could use them to make my garment fit.

If you want to make this pattern, be careful how to enter the measurements. The Bootstrapfashion.com instructions on how to enter the measurements are misleading since they are clearly meant to be used for women’s garments. The sleeve length is measured differently for men than for women. For women the sleeve length is measured from the shoulder to the wrist but for the men’t the starting point is not at the shoulder but in the middle of back of the neck. So, even if the text above the field says “The sleeve length from shoulder”, you have to input the sleeve length from the back of the neck in order to get the right size.

In the field, where it says “CENTER BACK LENGTH (GARMENT LENGT)” enter the shirt length from the back of the neck to the hem of the shirt. This is obviously different than the center back length in the instruction picture. Anyway, don’t let these warnings to put you of too much, when I have had trouble with my sewing patterns the customer service at the Bootstrapfashion.com has always been excellent.

Why this custom fit pattern is good, then? You can custom the size of the pattern much better than with your ordinary shirt patterns. You’ll input not only bust, waist and hip measurements, but also neck circumference, shoulder width, posture, upper arm, sleeve length and the wrist circumference. The best adjustment for my purposes is the shoulder slope since at least with my husband the wrong shoulder slope is a huge problem with RTW shirts and even with made-to-measure ones, since it is hard to adjust.

Making a shirt is not really difficult for me anymore. The only thing that I dread is the sleeve placket:

The process includes both cutting into your fabric (the route of no return) plus some complicated turning and folding of fabric that makes your brain hurt. This time, however, I found an excellent tutorial on how to easily make the sleeve placket. It’s from the blog called Off the cuff and written by a professional shirt maker Pam Erny. Her method of making the placket in two parts sort of made everything much easier and for now on I will user her method. (She also has a brilliant tutorial on chevron (bias) pockets and yokes.)

My dad got the shirt just in time and it fits quite well. The fabric is stretchy, so it also should be comfortable. It is pretty tight fitted through the chest, though, so the next time I will widen that part a bit. Despite this, the shirt looks good on my dad.

Isälle isänpäiväpaita

Tänä isänpäivänä halusin ommella isälleni paidan. Koskapa minulla oli mitat tallessa, saatoin tehdä paidasta sopivan jopa näin viidensadan kilometrin päässä. Aikaisemmat kokemukseni kustomoiduista Vado designs Men’s Shirt -kaavoista Bootstrapfashion.comissa olivat hyviä, joten päätin tällä kertaa kokeilla toista kaavaa. Valintani osui kaavaan Classic Fit Men’s Shirt. (Disklaimeri: Bootstrapfashion on blogini yhteistyökumppani. Kaavan saadakseni nettisivuille on syötettävä mitat. Näiden kanssa saa olla tarkkana, sillä osa ohjeista on harjaanjohtavia (ehkäpä siksi, että suurin osa sivuston kaavoista on suunnattu naisille). Onneksi aiemmat kokemukset kertoivat, miten mitat piti syöttää. Koska miesten hihan pituus mitataan tavallisesti niskasta ranteeseen, pitää tässäkin laittaa mitta “miesten tavalla”, vaikka ohjeessa lukeekin “SLEEVE LENGTH FROM SHOULDER”.

Kentässä, jossa lukee “CENTER BACK LENGTH (GARMENT LENGT)” tulee syöttää paidan pituus niskasta helmaan, vaikka infokuva kuinka näyttäisi mittaa niskasta vyötärölle. Joka tapauksessa älä liikaa pelästy! Milloin minulle on tullut vastaan ongelmia Bootstrapin kaavojen kanssa, olen aina saanut hyvää asiakaspalvelua.

Miksi sitten pidän näistä kaavoista? Lukuisat mitat, jotka kaavaa varten joutuu syöttämään, tekevät paidasta todella hyvin istuvan. Sen lisäksi, että syötät normaalit rinnan-, vyötärön- ja lantionympäryksen, Bootstrapin lomakkeeseen annetaan myös kaulan, käsivarren ja ranteen ympärysmitat, hartianleveys, hihan pituus, ryhti ja hartialinjan muoto. Varsinkin viimeisin on minusta harvinaisen hyödyllinen, sillä väärä hartialinjan muoto on yleensä syynä mieheni paitojen istumattomuuteen. Tämä on tullut vastaan jopa mittatilauspaidoissa!

Paidan ompelu sujuu nykyään jo minulta aika rutiinilla. Ainut työvaihe, jota olen kammonnut, on hiha-halkion ompelu. Se sisältää paitsi halkion aukileikkauksen (suuri mokaamisen mahdollisuus!) myös runsaasti kankaan taittelua ja vääntelyä, joka saa pääni aivan pyörälle. Nyt kuitenkin löysin netistä aivan mainion ohjeen hihahalkion ompeluun. Se on blogista Off the cuff ja sitä pitää ammatikseen paitoja ompeleva Pam Erny. Hänen tapansa tehdä halkiokappale kahdessa osassa tekee halkion ompelusta paljon selkeämpää ja tästä lähtien käytänkin aina hänen metodiaan. Blogista löytyy myös aivan mahtava ohje vinoon leikattuihin paidan kaarrokkeisiin ja taskuihin.

Isä sai paitansa juuri sopivasti isänpäiväksi ja se istuu! Ensi kerralla tosin lisään vielä hieman väljyyttä etukappaleeseen, mutta jo nyt paita näyttää hyvältä.
